Recanted Witness Testimony May Change Death Sentence for Alabama Prisoner

Mistaken identity and faulty eyewitness accounts are among the many flaws and frequent occurrences in death penalty trials. Such may be the case for Alabama death row prisoner William John Ziegler, who is appealing his death sentence for the murder of Russell Allen Baker in February 2000. An eyewitness who testified against Ziegler at trial recently stepped forward and said of Ziegler to authorities, "It wasn't him."
