Capital Defense Legal Training

Co-sponsored by Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers

CAPITAL DEFENSE PRACTICE FUNDAMENTALS

Friday, January 23, 2009  --  8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year’s conference theme, Training for the Long Run, underscores the fact that while we have “gone the distance” and had great successes in our litigation efforts, we still have some miles left before reaching the finish line.  Just as long distance runners increase their stamina and skill through frequent and intense practice, we come together to hone our capital defense skills.

Topics: Effective Mitigation Strategies; Developing Strong Client and Team Relations; Plea Negotiation: It Takes a Village; Integrating Themes & Theories and Presenting the Penalty Phase; and How to Get the Funds and Time to Do the Right Thing

Faculty: Russell Stetler, Scharlette Holdman, Marc Bookman, Karl Schwartz, and Danalynn Recer

CLE Credits: 6.0 hours*

Winning a Capital Trial: Jury Selection Training

Saturday, January 24, 2009  --  8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Successful death penalty voir dire is one of the most important skills for lawyers to master. Doing it well can win cases and saves lives. Participants will work with faculty to learn a version of the 'Colorado Method' of capital voir dire, which has become the national model.  Then they will have an opportunity to practice trial skills in small, intensive breakout sessions.

Faculty: David A. Lane, Killmer, Lane & Newman, LLP; with breakout session leaders: Marc

Bookman, William Rowe, Danalynn Recer, and Karl Schwartz

CLE Credits: 6.0 hours*

*PACDL will apply for 12 hours of Continuing Legal Education credit through the State Bar of Pennsylvania.  Complete information will be available in the registration packet you receive at check-in.  Please familiarize yourself with your state’s CLE requirements.
